Quick Look....

A quick look at todays’ headlines

  • Mladic to face tribunal tomorrow. He is accused of masterminding 1995 Srebrenica massacre. A total of 8000 men and boys were killed in the massacre.
  • Chinese hacked Google accounts of top US officials. Chinese call the attack as fabricated. This makes me think, whether 3rd world war will be a nuclear war or a cyber-war.
  • UK gave amnesty to 160,000 asylum seekers. Their cases were pending from last 6 years or more.
  • Source of E. Coli still unknown. Few more cases of E. Coli infection registered in Europe and in US.

..And while I write this, the battle in Yemen has intensified. My prayers with the people of Sanaa.

FIFA Elections - A Single Horse Race

Coming first in a class of two is no big deal.

Coming first when you are the only one in the class ….

FIFA Presidential elections happened today. Joseph Sepp Blatter, who has been holding the top spot since 1998, was the only contestant and it was a question of-Do you want him as next FIFA President or not? Representatives from 203 countries witnessed this single horse race.

Mohamed Bin Hammam, Asian Football Confederation president, who was about to contest for the top spot, had to withdraw his nomination because of corruption charges raised against him. Just before the voting ‘ceremony’, English football association tried to postpone elections, but the suggestion was turned down by 172 votes to 17. In the end, Mr. Blatter won the ‘thrilling –nerve wracking’ elections by 186 votes (out of 203).

Mr. Hammams’ trial and the irregularities in 2022 world cup bid will be enough keep Mr. Batter busy for next few months.

Should Others Follow Germans....

Speculating The Source

Germany is under E. Coli attack. The number of people killed has increased in past one week and hundreds are left sickened. Spanish cucumbers have been speculated as the source for E. Coli bacteria. Germany has banned the import of Cucumbers from Spain and other European nations have followed the suite. This has certainly increased the rift between Spain and Germany.

Facts in favour of Spain:

  • The source of E. Coli is not yet confirmed 100%. Russian researchers have speculated that the source could be Spinach or other salad.
  • No. of cases of E. Coli infection reported in Spain - Zero
  • 39 cases of E. Coli infection reported in Sweden – All have visited Germany in recent past.

At the time when Spain is trying hard to bring back its economy on track and at the time when the whole world is betting on Spain to crumble next, will Spain be able to come out of this crisis?

Take It or Leave It .....

TheNEWS

On Monday, most of Britain’s broadsheet and tabloid newspapers featured waste news on their cover page. Sorry for being too literal. ‘The Daily Telegraph’ headline read – ‘Rubbish piles up after no collections in 4 weeks’. That just show how a most common sight in some parts of the world, can make it to headlines in other parts!!

Similar story from yesteryear - ‘Bindra won Olympic Gold’.
